How do solar panels work?
A solar PV panel consists of many cells made from layers of semi-conducting material, most commonly silicon. When light shines on this material, a flow of electricity is created.
The cells don’t need direct sunlight to work and can even work on cloudy days. However, the stronger the sunshine, the more electricity generated.
Solar PV systems are made up of several panels, with each panel generating around 355W of energy in strong sunlight. Typical systems contain around 10 panels and generate direct current (DC) electricity. Because the electricity used for household appliances is alternating current (AC), an inverter is installed along with the system to convert DC electricity to AC. This electricity can be used throughout your home or can be exported to the grid.
With any domestic PV system, there will be times when the electricity you generate is more than you can use or store, so the surplus will be exported to the grid to be used by somebody else. If you want to be paid for exporting, you need to make sure you’re getting an export payment.
In Great Britain, the Smart Export Guarantee pays you for the electricity you generate.

This proposal is based on the information you provide and is subject to survey but will be an approximate indication of how much you can expect to pay.

Survey – not all installers offer a site survey but we do and here’s why
We have your info; you have your quote. Next step is survey. Simply select a date that suits you from our online calendar and one of our experienced surveyors will visit your property and carry out a full comprehensive survey, just as a final check to establish that your property is suitable for Solar.
The site survey is one of the essential aspects of planning or designing a successful solar system. This shouldn’t take longer than an hour, so there’s very little disruption, although we will need access to your loft space.
It’s highly unusual that your roof won’t be eligible for solar, but if your survey highlights any issues one of our team will be in touch.
The survey will establish the following –
- Roof measurements and data, including Pitch and Orientation
- Solar exposure through shading analysis
- Visual inspection of roof conditions and obstructions
- Information about the electrical system to determine interconnection methods
- Structural information such as rafter sizing and spacing
The cost of the survey is £100 which will be taken off your final balance if you decide to proceed. If the surveyor finds an issue with your roof and the install can’t proceed, the £100 survey fee will be returned to you, so technically it won’t actually cost you a penny.
There are some installers who will proceed to install without a site survey, but we feel it’s a vital part of the process and necessary to design an optimal and profitable Solar System.

Installation
Once our design team have received your survey it will be checked by our Solar Co-ordinators, and your proposal will be fine-tuned and re-sent to you.
Our team will then give you a call to check you’re happy and an install date can be booked.
We can usually install within 14 DAYS OF CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE, so you will have your panels up, running and saving you money, before you know it!
The installation process
- Choose your installation date
- Scaffold erected
- Solar panels installed
- Electrical visit to install invertor, commission system and install battery storage (if purchased)
- Scaffold dismantled
- Once your system is up and running you will receive your post installation paperwork that you will need to provide to your energy supplier informing them of your installation. Then you can simply sit back and enjoy the savings! (Please allow up to 10 working days for your paperwork to arrive)
